Education for the Children

A good education is the key to making the future goals of each child a reality. We make sure ensure that each child in the orphanage is receiving a quality education that is tailored to his or her personal goals and interests.

The children of our orphanage all go to private schools, as the public schools in Uganda face major problems of absenteeism by both students and teachers and a lack of scholastic materials.  The children who attend public schools generally score much lower on the national exams.  We believe that attending private elementary schools will give the children more opportunities in the future. There are no public secondary or professional training schools, so for the older children, private education is the only option.

All but two of the primary school children attend Kireka Grammar School. The school is very demanding and has great materials, including classes with computers. The results that students at the school get on the national exam are exceptional.

Two children attend Fairways school, which is the school that all the children attended until the owners changed last year.  One stayed at this school because he had been made the music and dance coach for the entire school. Another girl chose to stay because she is about the take the national exam and wanted to continue to study with the same professors.

The secondary school students attend one of two schools: Bethany School, which is an hour and a half walk from the orphanage and Kambogo, which is a little closer but more geared towards preparation for University.  Kambogo School presents a good opportunity to get into the University of Kambogo.

The professional training schools have been chosen by the older children based on their career goals. We have kids attending schools of accounting and business management, music, information technology, barbering and cosmetology, and car mechanics.

In addition, when all of our kids reach the age of 18 they will study to pass their driver’s license exam.  It is another weapon to defend themselves with later in their professional lives.
