Each of the 26 children at the orphanage has a unique story and spirit, but we wanted to introduce a few of them to give a better understanding of the children that we are working to support. The kids who live at the orphanage right now range from 3 to 22 years old and come from many different regions of Uganda including Buganda, Masaka, Mbarara, Luero, Soroti, Gulu, Karamoya Plain, Mbale, and Lira. Nearly all are orphans of both their mother and father and all the children come from communities that are very poor, where food, education and opportunity are scarce.

Moses

Kalema Moses, our future Michael Jackson!
Abandoned by his parents, (and with no living memory of his their life) Moses spent some time on the street.
One day a friend of one of our teachers, who then worked at the orphanage where our children used to live, left one morning and saw the child lying beside the road. When they returned at night after a long day of shopping, the boy was still there inert. They decided to pick him up and take them to the orphanage of the man who would later return them all to the street.
The incident occurred in August 2005. Music to Save Lives project began in September of that year!
Today, Moses, who sings beautifully, plays the guitar, dances -nothing like God-, is also the one who trains the whole school in dance, and has even been responsible for giving swimming lessons to the teachers of the school!!

Wasswa

We go regularly Nansana (a small community of very poor women). We go regularly to help them, with very little financial help, but at least it arrives directly to them.
Most of the women there aren´t able to educate their children.
Many of them are in charge of children, nephews, distant cousins who are orphaned. And every time we go we are asked to take some with us.
That day, we asked the children to dance with Yiga. Wasswa did with so much determination and so much art that we were moved.
Wasswa has a twin sister and another brother, who he takes care of a lot. His mother is ill and has no father. His brother and sister go to Nansana Elementary School thanks to the children at Escuela Micael who sponsor their studies.
Wasswa is currently one of the most charismatic of the choir.

Nakamya

Nakamya, like Wasswa, is from Nansana and auditioned with us on the very same day. She had recently lost her mother and never knew her father. As she looked down at the floor, we asked her if she wanted to come with us and she raised her eyebrows as if to say “Yes please!”. She came to our home and attends school with Wasswa.  She is one of the girls who has grown the most and now excels in many areas on stage.  She is still shy, but her eyes are bright with joy.

Katumba

At 15 years old, Katumba was one of the oldest children that we brought into the orphanage. His mother left him in the Dorcas Children Home outside of Kampala because she felt that she could not adequately feed Katumba or his brother Steven. He is now 19 and is quiet, generous and responsible. He is the big brother; he is the one to wake up the younger children and get them to school on time. If someone is sick, Katumba is always there to take care of them. He finished his studies in accounting in September and is one of our best dancers.
